00:36:55 Carl Weaver, MBA, CAE: Learn more about Eric Lim in his Hall of Honor bio: https://www.iamovers.org/ProgramsEducation/Content.aspx?ItemNumber=8234 (Congrats Eric!) 00:37:59 Terence Wee: So much to learn from Eric! 00:47:35 Erin Venable: Love what Eric is saying. Being aware of the cultural differences and of the different perspectives is paramount to avoid misunderstandings. 00:49:35 Ravi Rajamani: Absolutely..our industry is unique...we work in a diversified cultural environment. 00:56:59 Ann Wohlstetter: Building on this, what are thoughts around using the ‘kinder, softer, gentler’ approach, or, the more straight- forward and direct communication style, to ensure clarity of message? 00:59:17 Ravi Rajamani: We are in a people oriented business. Communication is the Key to success. 01:03:59 Georgia Angell: Communication is also about listening to understand. Do you have some tips on listening skills you use? 01:05:02 Erin Venable: I think gauging the relationship first is important - I've made the mistake of taking the "straight-forward/direct" route with someone I didn't have relationship with and it didn't go over well. It would have benefited from the other approach, although I can be more direct with people with whom I have a positive relational foundation. Plus, add in the cultural "rules" (like in France, always start the conversation with a greeting) or in more hierarchical countries, where you need to sometimes defer or be very respectful, etc. and it just gets really complex. 01:13:18 Carl Weaver, MBA, CAE: My colleague wrote this book, which has a great section on inter-cultural communications. It is high-level but gives a little insight on the topic. https://www.amazon.com/Etiquette-Engineers-Technical-Guide-Professionals/dp/1944616144 01:21:53 Daniel Bradley: Great thoughts from the panel.
